What made the piece a classic?

The song was written above a monumental stone mason's in Wimbeldon Park London in 1978. Geoff Downes, Trevor Horn and Bruce Wooley were in a room together and Bruce just had that famous chorus riff and the song built up from there. The record label 'Island ' took it on board and the single was born which would put Geoff, Trevor and Bruce on the map. With the tools of the day a selena, mini moog and profit 5, it took over 3 months to complete before the "Buggles" sent it into the charts.

On August 1st 1981 MTV launched onto the air waves. The first video to be aired was none other than "Video Killed The Radio Star". Geoff, Trevor and Bruce's creation had moved a long way from it's birthplace above a monumental stone masons.

The song is still played frequently on the airwaves around the world and was even covered by the alternative rockband "The Presidents of the United States of America" for the film the "Wedding Singer" in 1998. Today it is frequently still performed live by the co-author on stage with Steve Howe, Carl Palmer and John Wetton when "Asia" are on tour around the world.

Geoff Gives the history Video Killed The Radio Star

Okay so what do I get which a music teacher or the written music can't give me?

First remember that a music teacher is going to cost you at least $35 to $40 an hour. You would be a highly accomplished player to nail the piece in just one hour, more like two. That's $70 at least !

Also, the majority of transcriptions are all inaccurate and transcribe the piece into the key of D for ease.

According to Geoff's own words ..

"Its actually a lot more complicated piece of music than people think, for instance part of the bridge is actually chords suspended and minor 9ths. A lot of people transcribed the song wrongly, they thought it was a straight F# chord. The song was written in D flat. The suspended gives it a slightly different feel."

What better way to learn than being able to look over the shoulder of the man who wrote the piece of music

    1. In the exclusive video Geoff plays the whole piece all the way through with a view of his hands on the keys
    2. Geoff runs through the chorus, verse and middle eight individually for you to replay as many times as you wish or need
    3. Geoff gives you his original midi file for your keyboard so you can get it absolutely right at your leisure.
    4. A valuable lesson in building a piece of electronic music to take away and apply to other pieces.

"Thank you! That is awesome (I was hoping for better quality than is
up on youtube and it was!, nice to get a midi file to go along too)
You guys should do more of this! "
